ASA - Tandem-Internships in Countries of Africa, Asia, Latin America or Southeast Europe

ASA-Programm - Format global

The ASA program is a German development policy learning and qualification program. It is aimed at young people who want to understand global interrelationships, ask critical questions and campaign for a just world. The ASA program is offered by Engagement Global and is largely funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
With financial and content-related support from the ASA program, internship tandems are formed. The tandems consist of a participant from the TU Dresden or another German university and a participant from a developing country.
The respectively three-month tandem internships take place first at the TU Dresden and then at the foreign partner institution (in total six months).
The participants are supported in both phases with an ASA scholarship as well as with a travel allowance by the ASA program or the applying institution. The ASA program also insures the domestic and foreign participants during the internship phase abroad. In addition to the internships, the participants take part in ASA seminars in Germany, which focus on overarching and current development policy issues. They also become better acquainted with the ASA program and its overall offerings. The working language in the projects and during the internships is English.

Requirements for participation in the ASA program

Participants of the TU Dresden as well as possibly other participating German universities:

Students between the ages of 21 and 30 who are studying at the TU Dresden or at a German university, who are at the end of their Bachelor’s degree or in their Master’s degree (whose Bachelor’s degree was earned within the last 18 months) can apply for the ASA program. Foreign students from the above-mentioned universities can participate if they are enrolled in a full course of study and have their center of life in Dresden or Germany.
In the global program format, the internship tandems are composed of participants from both project countries. Participants from Africa, Asia, Latin America or Southeast Europe are between 21 and 35 years old and are in direct contact with the project partner in the partner country. They can be in their Master’s or PhD studies.
The participants are socially engaged young people who want to work for a fair and sustainable development. In the project internships, they want concrete tasks, their own creative freedom and the opportunity for personal and critical examination of global issues.
The project language is English. The participants have a very good to excellent knowledge of English (C1 is desirable, B2 is minimum), which enables them to conduct research in this foreign language. German language skills are desirable for foreign participants.

What kind of commitment is expected from the participants?

To occupy oneself with the culture, the political system, the social and climatic conditions and with the country and its people are essential prerequisites for the success of the internship abroad: The ASA program and also the LEONARDO-BÜRO SACHSEN therefore require that the participating students deal intensively with the respective partner country before the start of the internship. Intercultural preparation is of particular importance in order to avoid interculturally caused problem situations in the work process and in social life or to know strategies for dealing with them. Therefor the LEONARDO-BÜRO SACHSEN offers a digital workshop for the participants in April 2023.

The central ASA seminars of Engagement Global GmbH in internship phase 1 are part of the ASA program. ASA fellows are expected to attend the seminars, actively participate in the discussions, and network personally with their tandem partner as well as with other participants. Personal networks later help to maintain professional and private contacts worldwide.

All ASA scholarship holders are expected to prepare themselves very well for a domestic and foreign internship with a partner from Germany/Vietnam. This includes that they adjust to the tandem partner, deal with his/her culture and support each other linguistically and interculturally in the organization of the internship abroad.

All ASA fellows are also expected to participate in the preparation of intercultural information materials during or after their internships and/or to be prepared to give a presentation about the internship at information events or at internship cafés organized by the LEONARDO-BÜRO SACHSEN. This should help to improve the intercultural knowledge about individual countries and motivate other students to take the step of an internship abroad.

Complaint Procedure

Any ASA applicant or ASA fellow may submit a written complaint (usually via email) to report deficiencies in the preparation and implementation of the ASA internships. The first point of contact is the ASA team via the e-mail address katharina.gabel-stransky@tu-dresden.de.

If the problem is not solved in a satisfactory way, you can contact the office of the Chief Officer for Technology Transfer and Internationalization at TU Dresden, Prof. Dr. Ronald Tetzlaff, via the e-mail address ctio@tu-dresden.de.

Your information requirements

Please inform the ASA team informally by e-mail via katharina.gabel-stransky@tu-dresden about the following information needed for the implementation of the project and your internships abroad:

All ASA interns:

  • Address at the internship location,
  • Change of address at the place of study and home (informal),
