My experiences during the search for an internship placement and the application process
Since I am enrolled in a dual study program, I was able to find a team at one of my practical partner’s Portuguese locations fairly quickly that was willing to take on a student.
My experiences during the apartment search and journey there
Apartments in the greater Lisbon area are priced similarly to major German cities (Berlin, Munich, etc.). The best option I found was the student dormitories.
That's important:
Learn the most important things (hello, thank you, etc.) in Portuguese!
My Internship Experience
The people I met at work in Portugal were all very open, warm, and helpful. Moreover, I got the impression that in Portugal, in general, a great deal of work and research is currently being done on many new and innovative topics.
My Experience with Everyday Life and Leisure Time On-Site
Throughout the entire month of June, there are the Santos Populares festivals — colorful city and village festivals where people celebrate, eat sardines, and drink beer and cocktails. Otherwise, there are opportunities here to go surfing, climbing, and so on. One thing to keep in mind: outside of central Lisbon, many locals speak little or no English.
My Conclusion & Tips
Especially in summer, Portugal is a great experience that I wholeheartedly recommend! Tips: look for student dormitories for affordable accommodation, and learn the most important basics (hello, thank you, etc.) in Portuguese.
