Students and Graduates 〉 Internships abroad 〉 Erasmus+ internships abroad within Europe 〉 Before your internship
Before your internship
General Funding Criteria
Here we have summarized the most important eligibility criteria of the Erasmus+ program for an internship abroad in Europe for you:
- You must be enrolled at a participating university. Funding for graduates ends no later than 12 months after deregistration. At least 60 days of your Erasmus quota (max. 360 days per study cycle for multi-cycle degree programs, e.g., Bachelor’s and Master’s, or 720 days per study cycle for single-cycle degree programs, e.g., Diplom, State Examination) must still be available.
2. An Erasmus+ internship
- is eligible for funding from the first year of study; both mandatory and voluntary internships are possible,
- must be related to your field of study,
- can also include the preparation of a thesis, provided that the work/project tasks are equivalent to an internship and supervision and evaluation on site are ensured,
- must be carried out as a full-time internship (at least 32 hours per week),
- must last at least 60 days (including weekends and public holidays customary in the host country) and can be funded for up to 120 days,
- must be adequately insured (e.g., through the DAAD group insurance, tariff 720) – More information is available under ➚Before you start
Additionally important: Multiple funded stays abroad are possible, e.g., a semester abroad (5 months) and two internships abroad (3 and 4 months). Your personal Erasmus quota must not be exceeded.
A company salary for internships is not deducted from the Erasmus financial grant. Any non-compliance with the regulations of the Erasmus+ internship agreement may result in the reduction or withdrawal of the Erasmus+ scholarship.
This refers to:
- Shortening or termination of the internship to less than 60 days,
- Changes to the agreed internship content and work tasks,
- Missing deadlines.
All information on the implementation of the program can also be found in the ➚Erasmus+ Guide of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), here in a German version.

Criteria for an Erasmus+ grant
- The decision to award an Erasmus+ grant can, in principle, only be made within the limits of the available funds.
- You have received an acceptance from a host institution for an internship abroad.
- All application documents were submitted to Leonardo-Sachsen on time, and the information about the host institution, the internship, and the applicant has been positively reviewed based on the Erasmus Guide’s funding criteria.
- The legal entitlement to receive an Erasmus+ scholarship only comes into effect once all contractual parties (Saxon university, host institution, scholarship holder, and Leonardo-Sachsen) have signed the Grant and Learning Agreement.
Amount of Funding
There are three country groups defined by the European Commission. In addition, the country rates are centrally specified by the DAAD.
For the Erasmus+ project year 2024/2025, you will receive:

Application Deadline
The online application for the Erasmus+ scholarship must be submitted in full no later than 2 months before the start of the internship.
Important: The confirmation from the internship institution must already be available. If you are starting your internship abroad at very short notice, please send us an informal application for Erasmus funding by email in advance. However, you must then submit a complete online application within 7 calendar days.
For graduate funding, please register informally in advance by email at ➚auslandspraktikum@tu-dresden.de – at the latest during your final semester.
Important: Extensions can only be approved if sufficient scholarship funds are still available.
Recognition for the internship abroad
Before the start of your stay abroad, the ➚Learning Agreement must be signed by a responsible person at your university. With this signature, you acquire the right to have your internship recognized by your university.
Mandatory internships are recognized in the form of completed modules or credits; as a compulsory part of your studies, they are already included in the Diploma Supplement.
Voluntary internships can be included as elective modules in the Transcript of Records (grade report) or recorded in the Diploma Supplement (possibly as an appendix).
Graduate internships can, upon request, be recognized in the form of a Europass Mobility certificate. However, for internships, the most important form of recognition is a qualified internship certificate, which you will need in the future to demonstrate your skills and knowledge in applications.
Special Conditions for Returnees in their Home Country
Foreign students who return to their home country for an Erasmus+ internship may only receive Erasmus+ funding if they do not have their main residence in their home country.
Proof of residence in Germany is required (available from the local registration office).
