My Experience Searching for an Internship Facility and Applying
I used the overview of possible teaching hospitals for elective internships abroad, a list from the state examination office, as well as the lists of the Medical University of Vienna. I then applied through the internship coordinator of the clinic with a considerable lead time (about 2 years).
My Experience Searching for Accommodation and Traveling There
The dormitory room was provided by the clinic for 300 euros rent, and signing the rental agreement was straightforward alongside my work contract. I had my own room and my own bathroom, as well as access to a shared kitchen.
What I took away from it:
I can recommend a stay abroad during the Practical Year to everyone — also as a way to get to know a different structure within the healthcare system.
My Experiences During the Internship
Particularly noteworthy is the excellent organization of the host hospital, with a central welcome event followed by assignment to the respective wards. There, we were welcomed by the ward management, and the students’ tasks were explained to us.I was well integrated into the team, and over time it became possible to work increasingly independently. In the outpatient clinic, it was also possible to care for my own patients, and observing in the functional departments was unproblematic at any time. I assisted during operations and performed smaller individual steps. Personal initiative is required in order to be included; however, this makes it possible to learn numerous tasks under close supervision.
My Experiences with Daily Life and Leisure Time On-Site
Overall, Gmunden offers a very high quality of leisure time, with mountains and a lake within immediate walking distance. It is a great starting point for hiking, mountain sports, water sports, and cycling.
My Conclusion
Overall, I am very grateful for this time, which was both very educational on a medical level and very fulfilling on a personal and recreational level, filled with wonderful experiences. I can recommend a stay abroad during the Practical Year (final clinical year) to everyone — also to get to know a different structure within the healthcare system.
