Chair of Acoustics and Haptics – Institute of Acoustics and Speech Communication (CeTI): Research Internship in Psychoacoustics

Institution:
Dresden Technical University
Department: ➚Chair of Acoustics and Haptics – Institute of Acoustics and Speech Communication

CeTI stands for Centre for Tactile Internet with Human-in-the-Loop. The vision of CeTI, a Cluster of Excellence at the University of Technology Dresden, is to enable people to interact with cyber-physical systems in the real or virtual world via intelligent communication networks and systems in near real time.

The internship will be carried out as part of the ongoing psychoacoustic research conducted at the chair. The intern will support the general research activities focusing on the psychoacoustics, auditory perception, masking and auditory signal processing.

The intern will work within the Chair of Acoustics and Haptics, collaborating mainly with researchers in the fields of acoustics, psychoacoustics, auditory perception, and auditory signal processing. They will interact with doctoral and post-doctoral researchers and technical staff.

Expected tasks and responsibilities:

  • Conducting acoustic measurements and analyses
  • Assisting in the preparation and execution of psychoacoustic perceptual experiments (e.g. masking, loudness perception, sound-quality evaluation)
  • Contributing to literature surveys and documentation activities
  • Developing and modifying the scripts for experiment execution, control and data analysis
  • Data processing, statistical evaluation and reporting of the results

Main fields of expertise and skills the intern can expect to learn/improve:

  • Fundamentals of acoustics, psychoacoustics and auditory perception
  • Experiment design and execution in auditory science
  • Acoustic signal processing
  • Use of acoustic measurement tools and laboratory equipment (HEAD Acoustics product portfolio, MATLAB)
  • Handling and evaluation of the perception based acoustic datasets
  • Presentation of research results in a collaborative, multidisciplinary scientific environment, scientific communication and structured documentation skills
  • Critical thinking and analytical problem solving

Mentor: Dr. Robert Rosenkranz
(Please, use the ➚application link for your final application.)

Fields of study: Acoustics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Cognitive Science, Computer Science or similar, ideally with a focus on acoustics and/or psychoacoustics and/or a minor in psychophysics, statistics or experimental psychology.

Language skills: Besides English at CEFR Level B2, no additional language skills are mandatory. German is not required but can be helpful.

Software Applications:

  • Basic familiarity with data analysis tools is advantageous (e.g. Python, MATLAB, R etc.)
  • Experience in office tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint etc.)

Further qualifications:

  • Prior knowledge on psychoacoustics (loudness, masking, psychoacoustical experimentation methods etc.)
  • Basic signal processing knowledge
  • Experience in the programming languages
  • Experience with the statistical evaluation

We are looking for a person who has:

  • Interest in acoustics, psychoacoustics, perception research and auditory cognition
  • Willingness to work carefully with participants for psychoacoustical experimentation
  • Basic understanding of scientific research methods
  • Good communication and documentation skills
