United Nations University (UNU) offers two internships

Institution: ➚United Nations University (UNU)
Department: Institute for Integrated Management of Material Fluxes and of Resources (UNU-FLORES)

United Nations University – Institute for Integrated Management of Material Fluxes and of Resources (UNU-FLORES) is one of 13 research and training institutes, a global think tank for the UN system. UNU-FLORES develops strategies to resolve pressing issues in the sustainable use and integrated management of environmental resources such as water, soil, waste, energy, and other geo-resources that are of concern to the United Nations and its Member States – particularly in developing and emerging economies. Based in Dresden and Weißwasser, Germany, the Institute engages in research and innovation development, education and capacity development as well as outreach, advocacy and impact to advance the Resource Nexus. Mentor: Serena Coetzee (Please, use the ➚application link for your final application.)
Earliest/latest commencement date: flexible (start mid-June or July or start September)

Internship description:
Electronics offer numerous advantages for our lives, but at the cost of enormous resource and energy consumption and the generation of electronic waste. UNU-FLORES is involved in the “Responsible Electronics in the ➚Climate Change Era (REC²) excellence cluster of TU Dresden, which works on realizing responsible electronics for the future in an ecologically, economically and socially sustainable way. For this internship, the candidate will review state-of-the-art knowledge on responsible electronics and based on this, develop e-learning material for introducing practitioners and policy makers to the concept of responsible electronics, challenges, opportunities and case studies.

The intern will work with the following personnel: Prof Serena Coetzee (Head of Education); Dinara Dikhanbayeva (Education Programme Associate); Asha Verma (Education Research Associate); and Berthy Kpiebaya (Doctoral Researcher) and her doctoral research supervisors, Prof Edeltraud Günther and Dr Alexey Alekseenko.

We look for Master students in the areas of either electronics, environmental science or education, ideally with a focus on or a minor in sustainability.

The candidate should be familiar with Microsoft Office Suite.

Additional information/remarks about the profile of internship candidates:

The candidate should bring a keen interest in electronics and the future of our planet. It is unlikely that a single candidate will have a background in electronics, environmental science and education – one of these is sufficient, the necessary background in the other two will be acquired during the internship.

Mentor: Prof. Dr. Daniel Karthe (Please, use the ➚application link for your final application.)
Earliest/latest commencement date:

Internship description:

The intern is expected to develop a research agenda that relates to at least one (and preferably several) of the following fields, building specifically on the experiences of Taiwan, Germany and the United Nations system: (1) assessment of the environmental impact of the electronic industry (at one or more of the following stages: raw material sourcing; production; use phase; end-of-life), (2) strategies to reduce the environmental footprint of electronics (e.g., technology, policy/legislation).

Besides receiving support and guidance on research, the intern will have the opportunity to learn about the institute’s mission to advance the Resource Nexus and collaborate with the UN system at the science/policy interface. The intern will also have the chance to connect to researchers in the Excellence Cluster ➚Responsible Electronics in the Climate Change Era (REC2) at Dresden University of Technolog. The internship can potentially lead to co-supervision of a Master thesis by UNU-FLORES and a university in Taiwan.

The intern will work with the following personnel: Prof Daniel Karthe (Head of Research); Dr Alexey Alekseenko (Head of Resource Nexus Laboratory in Weisswasser).

We look for Master students in the areas of either electronics engineering, environmental sciences/sustainability sciences, political sciences (or similar)
